What Do We Mean By Small Farm - Big Dogs?

Feathers And Fleece Puppies come well socialized and ready to play.
We have a strict no puppy left behind policy.
We handle puppies from day one until the day they leave the farm.
Every puppy will have had at least 4 baths, teeth brushed, ears cleaned, vet checked,
puppy shots, wormed twice and had at least 100 kisses,
So you will get a fun loving forever friend!

Our mission statement and price policy
We run a clean and healthy farm where we spare no expense in the care and treatment of our dogs.We are aware that there are breeders out there with less expensive puppies. We have been at both ends of the breeding business. We, at one time were in the position as buyer and have toured many breeders homes. We choose to treat our dogs like family and provide them with the type of home and care that we would want if we were living a dogs life. It takes many hours to socialize puppies and train large breed dogs. It takes a lot to transport large breeds back and forth to the vet and to keep them to be groomed. This is not important to all breeders but we see it differently. The end result is that we can be sure that when we send a puppy to his new home, that you- as a new puppy owner will have no issues with health or behavior. We get all of our dogs certified for hips and elbows, this is a common procedure for Newfoundlands, Komondors and Old English Sheepdogs but not a common procedure for Great Pyrenees breeders. We have chosen to do this so all involved can have peace of mind, and we can rest assurred that we have placed the healthiest possible puppy in your home possible. As you look over our site I am aware that there are some folks that think we go a bit over board with our puppy facility to produce so few litters a year. We do this because our dogs are family members and we want them to live in as nice a home as possible. Yes, they have gardens, music and super nice houses and fences but wouldn't you if you were a dog?
Every cent that the farm brings in goes back into the farm, either in the form of fencing, landscaping, food or health care.

A NOTE ABOUT FEATHERS AND FLEECE FARM
Thank you for visiting Feathers And Fleece Farm.
We have chosen to raise these particular animals because they fit our life style.
We are in no way a large kennel operation.
In most cases we only have a mating pair of a particular breed.
We have chosen to raise breeds that we love and breeds that fit our
life style so they can live with us and live our lives.
We have chosen our pets for their health and confirmation.
We look for the finest in a breed. We breed for QUALITY and not for quantity.
Living on a farm allows us space and facilities to raise these breeds.
It is important to us to do the best possible service to the dogs, sheep, and chickens that we raise.
We feed our animals quality feeds, provide them with the best health care, and allow them plenty
of space to roam and feel independent, and still interact with our family, friends, and visitors.
Feathers And Fleece Farm has been in the business of raising show quality Silkies for many years.
In recent years we started raising another rare breed - Barnevelder Chickens.
We are proud to be one of only a handful of breeders in the country that raise True Dutch Barnevelders.
Please visit our Poultry Barn page to learn about this wonderful breed.
As you look through the pages of our website you will note three aspects of our lives stand out.
One- that we try to raise the unusual and hard to find, Two- that we really love our animals like family members,
Three- that we are always learning an will never say we know everything about any breed.
My vet has always been open to new ideas and solutions and has been a wonderful role model for me.
One thing about my favorite vet Dr. Patty is she not only provides the finest in Vet care but she
arms her clients with the knowledge to be better breeders and pet owners. I cannot
say enough good things about my Dr Patty and the rest of the staff at North Madison Vet Clinic
if it were not for their loving support and always being there
to answer my questions I would not be able to do what I do.
We have chosen dog breeds that are about as poultry friendly as a dog can get.
Our Great Pyrenees are more like family members then gaurdian dogs.
They run freely on more than 12 fenced acres. With the exception on of Mattie,
("Mattie lives where Mattie wants". Sometimes inside - Sometimes outside).
Our Superior Old English Sheepdogs are inside dogs, but have open access to the farm
with a dog door.
Look closely you will probably see atleast one in every photo, they love to be photographed!
They are truely the fun in my life!
Even when doing simple cleaning tasks they are right by my side going from room to room.
As for my registered babydoll sheep. We raise tiny babydoll sheep because they are friendly, and useful.
I have raised sheep for many years, different breeds.
I have found the Old English Southdowns to be far less destructive to our property,
healthier, and more outgoing and excepting of people compared to other sheep breeds.
We are drawn to "low maintanence" breeds and Old English Babydoll Sheep fit that bill!
They will eat the fruit from the ground that falls off of the tree but not the tree.
Unlike other sheep breeds that might climb the tree to eat all of the greenery and leave the rotting fruit on the ground.
Babydoll Sheep also birth easily, and are small enough, and gentle enough I can worm them
and trim hooves all by myself. In addition...They are REALY CUTE! They even Smile!
Have a look around our farm, and enjoy our site.

A Note About Our Great Pyrenees
We first started raising Great Pyrenees Dogs several years back in hopes that they would help us protect our small babydoll sheep.
Quickly, I realized that I only raised sheep as a cover for raising the Great Pyrenees dogs. From my very first male I knew this was the breed for me.
We connected in a way I cannot explain; but fellow Great Pyrenees owners know what I am talking about. We have a mature understanding of what the other
wants and expects from one another, as well as the desire to be loved. Me by them, and them by me. I truely love this breed and have spent countless hours
researching the breed and behaviors of these beautiful gentle giants. I work with my Great Pyrenees adult dogs daily. I spend a few minutes a day grooming them,
but the bulk of the time I am with them is just a belly and ear rubbing fest! ( They love ear and belly rubs).
We have between two and three litters of puppies a year. Each puppy is given a well balanced high protien diet until they are ready to go to new homes.
We use Dr. Patty McDill for all of our needs on the farm. We sought her out because of her vast knowledge of the breed and love of large breed dogs.
In choosing our foundation stock for our Great Pyrenees we were very clear about what we were looking for in our dogs.
-
A correct head shape, not too heavy and slightly rounded at the crown ( not oversized as seen in a Saint Benard).
-
A muzzle that blended well with the skull ( giving the Great Pyrenees a boxed nose in apperance).
-
Lips that fit tight with the upper lip covering the lower lip. ( some believe this to be a trait that will prevent drooling in large breed dogs.
There has been much written on the topic . It is widley believed that diet and exercise are more
likely the reason for less drool).
-
Strong lower jaw.
-
A very nice full double coat. ( badger markings often fade within the first year, Our first Great Pyrenees male was covered with the most beautiful markings which faded within 6 mo.
-
By the time he was 2 years he was solid white like the females.
-
Good bone structure, with no history of hip or elbow displaysia, or joint issues.
-
Once our dogs reach the age of 2 we have them OFA certified.
So you can rest assured you are going to have your Great Pyrenees for a long time.
Let's Talk Old English Sheepdogs!
I began raising Old English Sheepdogs for the friendly, yet silly way these dogs carry themselves. To me they are just real life oversized teddy bears.
I have found this breed to be very rewarding. I cannot help but smile everytime I see them. My sheepdogs are always playful and energetic.
Old English Sheepdogs are very eager to please and
are very trainable. Housebreaking my Old English Sheepdog (OES) was so easy. They love to hear how good they are, so we pour on the "waytago's" here!
Belly rubs are also an incentive for house breaking them.
I found that of all the dogs on our farm that the Old English Sheepdog is the most eager to please me.
This breed ( unlike the others on our farm ) does not need me to fence them in.
I just let them out and they do their business and then come back to the door.
In the event that they get distracted (which happens often) mall I need to do is simply call their names and they run to me.
Old English Sheepdogs as a breed are not known to be water dogs, but mine love the water.
They do not run to the dock on the lake and jump in like the Newfies but they do go to the shallow edge and wade into the water.
Great fun to watch, the only bad part to this story is that then they like to roll in the grass, mulch , leaves,
dirt whatever is nearest as soon as they get out. That is why I use a groomer four times or so a year.
The Old English Sheepdogs require a weekly brushing which they find very relaxing.
I suggest to keep a brush handy in the toy bucket and brush early on and often. I make it part of my petting routine.
Since our Old English Sheepdog foundation stock was very expensive we keep them in the house with us.
They are excellent guard dogs. They protect my family like our Great Pyrenees protect our sheep.
If they sense harm they litterally push us back, and get in front of us. We made a special deck for them to go out onto our porch and drive
whenever they want with a dog door access. They see this is our first line of defense. As you drive up our driveway they will greet you,
if you get past them you will then be greeted by Mattie our oldest female Great Pyrenees, and if you make it upstairs you will get a lap full of Paisley our Newfie gal.
Unlike the Great Pyrenees I do not allow the Old English Sheepdogs free run of the property in the fields
, I worry about theft and would not want another dog to breed my prestigious female.
Instead you find them anywhere that I am. It would be rare if not unheard of to see me at anytime on the property without atleast one
Old English Sheepdog by my side. Old English Sheepdogs love the company of People big and small.
As you look through our farm photos you will see what I am talking about.
